September 29th, 2010 – The Village Green Parkette, Thedford. A tree-planting in essay, Memory of Beverley Anne (Burch) Beernink: 44 friends and family of Bev Beernink met at the parkette to emerson essay plant a tree in Bev’s memory. It was a beautiful fall day, with a glorious pink sunset . We’ve come together here tonight, not to celebrate the birthday that Bev will never have, but to wharton essay commemorate: we’re here to celebrate Friendship and Memories. If there’s anyone here I haven’t met yet, my name is Mary Alderson.
But there will be some people here tonight who still call me Mary Blewett. Tonight’s gathering was initiated by our “group of seven” – well, six, now that Bev’s left us – Joanne (McKellar) Vandersluis, Beth (Ross) Casey, Lorraine (Carson) Willemse, Lyn (Webster) Jay, Toni (Sutton) Backx, and of course Bev and me. The idea of doing something special to commemorate Bev was Toni’s brainchild, and soon the plan for emerson essay on education this tree-planting was put in place. Of this group of friends, Joanne and Bev have the longest connection – going back to early elementary school here in Thedford. Then Beth, Susie (Schlegel) Wilson I met Bev when she came to Bosanquet Central School in Grade six. Wharton Essay? There were 13 new students in our class, transferred from Thedford Public School. My sister was teaching at Bosanquet at that time – and she told me that our teacher, Fran McIntyre – who we, of course, knew as Miss Patterson – called them the Dirty Dozen and Bev. Bev’s good friends were Darrell Laird, Mark Donald, Brad Willert and Tom Carrothers – and I’m pretty sure that Darrell, Mark and Brad were honourary members of the dirty dozen. Then we all went to North Lambton Secondary School, where we became friends with Lorraine, Lyn and Toni.
Later our group went to dangerous essay Fanshawe and Western at the same time, all of wharton essay, us living in apartments in London in various combinations. Amazingly, we have all kept in touch over the years – letters, phone calls, visits, now email and emerson, facebook. We all attended each other’s weddings, and got together with babies on our knees, at Lorraine’s farm or my parents’ cottage at Ipperwash. Among the wharton seven of us, we’ve raised 21 children. When the kids got a little older, we starting going on outings without them. I remember lunches at the Schnitzel House, then dinners at the Olive Garden and Under the Volcano in London.
Then there was a big trip to Toronto to see the ground-breaking musical, Show Boat. Thesis Microspheres? We were musical theatre aficionados before we even knew it. (Thomas still hasn’t forgiven me for not taking him along on that trip.) We had some cottage weekends – I remember going up to St. Josephs, and down to Port Stanley. Toni was the glue that brought us together for those trips. Six years ago, we all went to the Grand in London to see the Sound of Music, and I think Bev especially enjoyed the theatre trips. She loved show tunes. And her favourite singer was Barbra Striesand. In fact, she and my son, Thomas, had a discussion a while ago, about who was better, Barbra or Celine. Well, apparently, Bev won that debate, because Thomas is here tonight to sing a Barbra song. I had hoped Streisand herself might come sing it, but she was busy. There’s a favourite line in this song: “It’s the wharton laughter we will remember” which is so true of microspheres, our Bev.
I’m sure I’ll always be able to hear her laugh. In keeping with our theme of Friendship and Memories, here’s The Way We Were. Wharton Essay? Memories, light the corners of my mind. Misty watercolor memories of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind. smiles we give to one another. for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then. or has time rewritten every line? If we had the chance to do it all again. tell me would we? Could we? Memories, may be beautiful and yet. what#8217;s too painful to dangerous habits remember. we simply choose to forget. So it#8217;s the laughter we will remember. whenever we remember. the way we were. I would now like to read the inscription on wharton the plaque, which is on donald poetry and ambition the rock under the tree.
This tree was planted in memory of our dear friend. Beverley Anne (Burch) Beernink. on her birthday, September 29, 2010. Bev left us too soon on June 20, 2010. “Because I knew you, I have been changed for the better” I was inspired to wharton essay use that quote by a song entitled For Good. It’s from the schtz the stranger an essay psychology Broadway musical “Wicked”, which is the pre-quel to wharton essay “The Wizard of Oz”. It’s a duet between the donald essay and ambition Glinda, the good witch, and Elpheba, the essay wicked witch of the castle essay quotes west, who wasn’t wicked at all. This song is about their friendship when they were college roommates, and it says “I was changed for the better because I knew you – Because I knew you, I was changed for good.” That’s what Bev did; she brought out the best in others. She once told me that she was a “Glass half-full girl”. Essay? She was always optimistic, always ready for a laugh.
My last conversation with her, just a few days before she died, illustrated this: I had just come from the dentist, where I found out that I needed dental surgery and essay on education, crowns, which would be time consuming, painful and cost a couple thousand dollars. Plus I had to buy an expensive electric toothbrush. With all my whining, Bev started to giggle. Wharton Essay? “You make me laugh, girl” she said. In this world, where it is so easy to become jaded and cynical and habits essay, sarcastic, Bev saw the bright side, and left us encouraged. She inspired us to wharton see the half-full glass. Because we knew her, we have been changed for the better. I#8217;ve heard it said. That people come into our lives for a reason. Bringing something we must learn. To those who help us most to grow. Castle? And we help them in return.
Well, I don#8217;t know if I believe that#8217;s true. But I know I#8217;m who I am today. Because I knew you#8230; Like a comet pulled from wharton essay, orbit. As it passes a sun. Like a stream that meets a boulder. Poetry And Ambition? Halfway through the wood. Who can say if I#8217;ve been changed for the better? But because I knew you. I have been changed for good. That we will never meet again. In this lifetime.
So let me say before we part. Is made of what I learned from you. You#8217;ll be with me. Like a handprint on my heart. And now whatever way our stories end. I know you have re-written mine. By being my friend#8230; Like a ship blown from its mooring. By a wind off the sea. Like a seed dropped by a skybird. In a distant wood. Who can say if I#8217;ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you. Because I knew you. I have been changed for good. And just to clear the air. I ask forgiveness. For the things I#8217;ve done you blame me for. But then, I guess we know.
There#8217;s blame to share. And none of wharton, it seems to matter anymore. Like a comet pulled from orbit. Dangerous Habits Exemplification Essay? As it passes a sun. Like a stream that meets a boulder. Halfway through the wood. Like a ship blown from its mooring.
By a wind off the sea. Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood. Who can say if I#8217;ve been. Changed for the better? I do believe I have been. Wharton? Changed for on mucoadhesive the better. And because I knew you#8230; Because I knew you#8230; Because I knew you#8230; I have been changed for good#8230; Today is wharton essay Bev’s birthday, and it would have been a milestone. She was the youngest of our group, and she would have been the last to reach this age.
Ironically, it was Bev that talked about “freedom 55”, and how she was looking forward to it. Essay On Education? Unfortunately, she won’t become a Golden Girl with the rest of wharton essay, us, and that’s something we’ll always miss. But I thought about her this summer when I saw some Golden Girls re-runs on television. There’s a line in their theme song, which aptly describes our Bev. “You’re a pal and a confidant.” She was always a good pal, and she was indeed a good confidant. I could tell her anything – she listened well, she was never judgemental, and she was always supportive. Which brings me back to schtz in social psychology the name of the Golden Girls song – “Thank you for essay being a friend.” Thank you for being a friend.
Traveled down the road and back again. your heart is true, you#8217;re a pal and a confidant. And if you threw a party. Invited everyone you knew. You would see, the thesis biggest gift would be from me. and the card attached would say, Thank you for being a friend. We’re giving Bev something we hope will become the biggest gift – a tree in her memory. We want it to wharton be known as “Bev’s Birch”. Happy Birthday, Bev! There are many people to thank: Bev’s brother Dave, and microspheres, Melinda who found this tree for us, Bev’s sister Joanne, and Rick who helped with the preparation.
Lorraine and Harry who donated the rock, and Harry for transporting it. Thank you to wharton essay everyone who contributed towards the tree: Joanne, Beth, Lyn, Lorraine, Toni and Susie – who was here last week, visiting from BC, and sends her regards to everyone – and Mark, Brad, Darrell, and Tom. Also, Mary Lou Glenn who has her own special memories of Bev, and dangerous driving habits essay, Ruth Illman who enjoyed having Bev as a student, as well as Wayne Bernie Hutton, Debbie Campbell and wharton essay, Heather Swenson. Any funds left over after the expenses are paid will go to the Heart Stroike Foundation. Thank you to Thomas for singing, to Chelsey for taking photos and dangerous driving habits, video, and to Victor for all his help. The only thing that could possibly be more important than friendship is family , and so we say a special thank you to Jerry, Chris Kerry, Mike Jenna and essay, Tim, as well as Dave and Joanne for sharing Bev with us.
Now, we would like to plant the tree, take some photos with it, and then we’re off to Grog’s to celebrate our memories of our good friend Bev. Thank you for being a friend…..Thank you to all of you. (Photos are posted on my facebook page.) Written by exemplification Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Wharton Essay? Music Lyrics by Frank Loesser. Directed Choreographed by Michael Lichtefeld. You pass through Stratford, then up through Mennonite country and on to the sleepy village of Drayton. And while the emerson village itself seems lethargic on a Sunday afternoon, the action on essay the renovated, larger stage at the Drayton Festival Theatre is anything but. Guys and Dolls opened Sunday, September 19 with a lively cast, energetically singing and dancing their way through this old Broadway favourite. Donald And Ambition? Guys and Dolls premiered in 1950, the story of the clash between the essay Save-Our-Soul Mission, which is a Salvation Army-like group, and on education, tough gamblers involved in an illegal crap game. Wharton Essay? Eddie Glen is excellent as Nathan Detroit, the likeable organizer of statements, New York’s longest running floating crap game. Glen’s comedic timing is spot on and he possesses a charismatic stage presence. Even though Nathan Detroit is an wharton, illegal gambler who won’t marry his sweet girlfriend, we love him all the same, and Glen plays the lovable rogue well. His girlfriend, Adelaide, is dangerous habits exemplification a Broadway showgirl, played hilariously by essay Jackie Mustakas.
Mustakas has the New York accent down pat, and sings in it, too. Adelaide and Nathan have been engaged for 14 years, and Mustakas takes full advantage of humour created by her desire to give up being a Broadway dancer to become a housewife with a picket fence. Glen and Mustakas are delightful together, each building on the other’s comedic talents. Both are laugh-out-loud funny. Karen Coughlin is the prim and proper Sarah Brown, while Paul McQuillan plays Sky Masterson, the gambler who loses a bet on his ability to attract women. They meet when Masterson has to entice her to travel to Cuba with him to win his bet. And even though they come from two different worlds, they eventually fall in love. There should be more chemistry between Coughlin and McQuillan, to schtz in social psychology make this mismatched couple#8217;s relationship believable.
The chorus numbers are exceptional, in particular, all the gamblers dancing around while throwing the essay dice in The Crapshooters Dance. This group of young man tear up the donald hall new bigger stage at Drayton Theatre with unbelievable energy. This number is essay followed by McQuillan singing the on mucoadhesive microspheres familiar “Luck be a Lady Tonight”, made famous by Frank Sinatra in the movie version. Mustakas as Adelaide, along with the Hotbox Girls, tap dance their way across the stage after removing their mink stoles and ball gowns, to wharton reveal lacy showgirl costumes, in ‘Take Back your Mink”. Again the energy is thesis statements essays amazing. Another favourite scene is when all the gamblers are finally taken to the Mission to repent of their sins. They sing the gospel number “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat”. Allan Gillespie as Nicely-Nicely has a great solo as he testifies.
Glen as Nathan Detroit leads the group of tough-guy gamblers as if they were a church choir, and they bring down the rafters. William Fisher as Sarah’s grandfather sings the heart-warming “More I cannot wish you”, and wharton, Jill Diane Fillion is the dangerous habits exemplification essay strict Mission General who loosens up with some dancing in the pews. Wharton Essay? Michel LeFleche is an excellent thug, along with the visiting hood, big guy Jule played by thesis Lee Siegel. They have the cadence of the gangster language down pat. Michael Rawley as Lieutenant Brannigan is the nemesis of the gamblers.
The rest of the cast, Carla Bennett, Melanie McInenly, Todd Noel, Stephen Roberts, Mike Tracz, Michelle Black, Duff MacDonald, Ray Hogg, Kimberley Rampersad, Matthew Rossoff, Galen Johnson, and Chad McFadden are an excellent ensemble of singers and dancers. Costumes are bright and colourful – all the gamblers are dressed in wharton, pin stripe suits, in many different hues. The women are attired in interesting dresses appropriate to the 1940s, while the Mission folks have very realistic Salvation Army hats and capes. Hairstyles are pure 1940s. The cast is dangerous driving habits commended for quick costume and wig changes. Set designers took full advantage of wharton essay, Drayton’s larger stage, creating a seedy Broadway street scene, the Mission and even New York sewers. Credit goes to Director Michael Lichtefeld for on mucoadhesive microspheres keeping the show lively and wharton essay, funny, and not letting it show its age. Castle Essay Quotes? Children are jaded when attending live theatre today. How can the action on stage possibly compete with the special effects on movie screens? How can theatre compare to all the antics in the artist’s imagination in animated cartoons? How can actors ever respond to essay the child’s wishes, the an essay psychology way a character in a video game will? If you have kids or grandkids who you fear will not be impressed with live theatre because they are overloaded with the dynamics of the big and small screen, then take them to wharton see Peter Pan at the Avon Theatre in Stratford.
This play has more magic than a movie chock-full of special effects and thesis statements, all the fun of a Disney cartoon. And it’s real – right there before your eyes. Peter, Wendy, John and Michael really fly. And no, I didn’t see the lines that I knew were there. Nor was there any pause in the action while harnesses were adjusted and wharton, the lines attached.
They just flew up in the air – away they went. Pure magic. A huge pirate ship sails onstage, with pirates singing and dancing. It’s like the Disney ride Pirates of the Caribbean, except these are real, live pirates! There’s snow falling, stars twinkling, waves rolling across the sea and bubbles floating in the air, all appearing as if by magic.
A dinosaur, a mermaid, the twinkling fairy, and, of schtz, course, the ticking crocodile all add to the enchantment. Michael Therriault plays the dichotomy that is Peter Pan – he’s sometimes a bit too serious, but other times he’s a bouncing boy with attention deficit disorder. Therriault has amazing energy: leaping on wharton essay beds, or flipping summersaults when hanging from the ceiling. He captures the on education fidgeting curiosity of a nine year old. Wharton Essay? Because he’s a little older than we are used to seeing Peter, he reminds me of the adult Tom Hanks playing the boy in statements for comparative essays, the movie BIG. Jay T. Schramek nearly steals the show and delights the children as the shaggy dog who is the children’s Nanny.
From his panting tongue to his wagging tail, he has the wharton essay doggy characteristics down pat. Sara Topham is essay quotes a delightful Wendy, taking on the mothering role while remaining a child in wharton, a realistic way. Emerson Essay? Paul Dunn shows comedic talent as John, when imitating his father, Mr. Darling, played hilariously Sanjay Talwar. Stacie Steadman crosses over to play the little boy Michael, and unfortunately, while she does well at being a child, we never quite forget that she’s a female. It is so refreshing to have a man, rather than the essay traditional woman play Peter, that it’s regrettable they couldn’t find a male to play Michael.
Laura Condlin plays a loving Mrs. Essay? Darling, and Martha Farrell provides laughs as the maid. Ari Weinberg as Tootles, leads the lost boys, playing a character reminiscent of Mike Myers in the Saturday Night Live sketch Simon in the bathtub. He and the other five lost boys all show excellent comedic timing and wharton, work well together. The band of pirates is delightful, particularly when they run up the aisles and then throw the lost boys through the air from the box seats. Essay On Education? Comedian Sean Cullen as Smee even tossed off some improv jokes when a lost boy was missing a face! Tom McCamus plays the nasty Captain James Hook, but also slyly doubles as J. M. Wharton? Barrie, the author of Peter Pan and narrator of this play. He is charming as Barrie and equally fascinating as the evil Hook. The sets and special surprise effects are amazing, and the costumes are colourful, making each character spell binding. This is the best show ever produced at Stratford to welcome children to driving habits exemplification live theatre.
And though there were many in the audience on the evening I attended, they were all enthralled, captivated by the show. Especially the one wee patron who arrived at the theatre all dressed in her Tinkerbell costume. Essay? Peter Pan continues at the Avon Theatre, Stratford until October 31. As a 13 year old, Patsy sang in what Way describes as “juke joints” and bars, which she should not have legally been in. In those early days, Cline called her genre Hillbilly music. We also learn that Patsy’s real name is Ginny Hensley (named Virginia after her home state).
She changed her name to Patsy after the early country singer Patsy Montana. Cline was her first husband’s name, the only useful thing he gave her. Way sings the Tammy Wynette song D I V O R C E, while she describes the end of Patsy’s first marriage. We hear a litany of great hits – some more hillbilly with the slight yodel sound, others are pure country. But then there are several crossover songs. Cline moved into pop, even gentle rock and roll, and many of her songs had a bluesy sound. Way demonstrates her versatile voice by singing the Cline hits in various styles. A crowd favourite is the an essay psychology song Crazy. Patsy Cline was known for her husky deep voice filled with passion and Way has captured that sound.
While there isn’t any formal choreography, Way dances throughout. She has some charming moves in Stop, Look Listen. Director Marcia Kash, herself the author of a couple of great Canadian farces (Who’s Under Where and Too Many Cooks), knows how to thesis for comparative organize a farce: lots of slamming doors, funny faces, and in this case, plenty of running and jumping around the stage. See How They Run is a true British farce, written by Phillip King in the 1940s to entertain British troops in World War II. What is most impressive about For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, now playing at Stratford’s Tom Patterson Theatre, is the script. Michel Tremblay, if not Canada’s premier playwright, certainly Quebec’s, has written an intelligent, bittersweet story, capably translated by Linda Gaboriau. Tremblay, disguised as “The Narrator” in this play, tells the audience that it’s not going to thesis statements be a big impressive show – he stresses that this is not Shakespeare, not Beckett, not Chekhov, nor Tennessee Williams – we sit back and are lulled into thinking it will be an effortless evening.
But then Tremblay gives us his mother, Nana, and we realize that we are going to be entertained, and we are going to learn more than if we were sitting through classical theatre. Essay? For the on education Pleasure of essay, Seeing Her Again could be viewed as nothing more than Tremblay reminiscing about his mother. The narrator leads the audience to believe he is just going to dangerous driving habits essay tell us a few stories about his mom. He steps back into essay, the scene as a 10-year-old boy facing his angry mother, who is hall essay and ambition upset that the police have come looking for him. Wharton Essay? She exaggerates his misdemeanour acting out the horrors that his minor mischief might have created.
Tremblay shares more memories when he is 13, and dangerous driving habits, his mother has offered him her melodramatic novels from France to read. When the young boy questions the lack of reality in the romance novels, his mother goes to wharton essay great extent to defend the books. And thus the play moves along, with Tremblay simply relating amusing stories about his mother. Hall Essay? And then suddenly the audience realizes that this is much more than just sharing memories through flashbacks. We are being given an amazing glimpse into the making of an wharton, artist. His mother, this housewife who is locked into her position by the patriarchal and religious Quebec of the 1950’s, is actually shaping one of Canada’s best and most prolific authors and playwrights. Her theatrical way of raising her son, her creative imagination in essay quotes, telling him the stories of their family, her wonderful sense of wharton essay, humour, and her passion for books and the stranger, movies have made him who he is. Her pride and essay, love of her son, although not always spoken, is present.
But maybe it has taken retrospection for him to see it. All the humour dissipates towards the end of the psychology one-act show. He is only 21 and his mother is dying of cancer. Despite the sorrow, there is a wonderful surprise ending which cannot be revealed here, for fear of spoiling the production for future audiences. Lucy Peacock is the melodramatic Nana, commanding the stage with her energy. At times, her anger is too strong and wharton, her tone too harsh as she yells at emerson essay her son for his transgressions.
I was looking for a moment of tenderness or a touch of warmth on which to build the wharton mother-son connection that was obviously supposed to be there. Tom Rooney is the narrator, overshadowed by Nana’s power. Rooney is reserved, staying in dangerous driving habits, the narrator role, and not becoming the wharton young son. Again, I feel there could be more of a bond evident between the two characters. Still, Tremblay’s brilliant story shines through in their dialogue. I was completely taken by the script when I saw it presented at London’s Grand Theatre in February 2007, and the way simple anecdotes are, in fact, brilliant revelations about essay poetry, family relationships and a parent’s influence.
